The death of Queen Elizabeth II, whose coffin has just completed its journey to Westminster Abbey, is being exploited by hackers to phishing Internet users, Numerama reported on September 15 through an alert from the specialized company in Proofpoint cybersecurity.
The scammers pose as the Microsoft company, which would offer a supposed platform to collect all the tributes paid to the Queen. To recover the data of defrauded Internet users, the malicious group offers them to register on a platform that allows them to send tribute messages or photos.
But to register, you need to provide your own Microsoft IDs, i.e. email address, password and code required for double authentication, which allow hackers to easily steal victims’ personal information.
A well established scam
In addition to playing on the emotional side, email is particularly deceptive and takes well to graphic codes from the Microsoft group. There are very few typos or spelling errors that would distinguish the hoax.
As Numerama recalls, the National Cybersecurity Center of the United Kingdom alerted its citizens in a press release on September 13 about the risks of potential phishing after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
