Samsung S23: when purchased, the storage capacity is already half full

The operating system and pre-installed apps take up half of the storage space.

Bad surprise for those who were impatiently waiting for the launch of the Samsung S23. The Android operating system occupies almost 60 GB of the storage capacity of a 128 GB phone, almost half, said the specialized media ArsTechnica.

For comparison, Samsung’s Android system is four times larger than that installed on a Google Pixel 7-type device. There are several reasons for such a footprint. Samsung brings many changes and innovations to its Android system with each new generation of phones, which does not go in the direction of a reduction in the use of storage space, specialized media warn.

Unlike Google Pixel phones, Samsung has to reinstall all Google apps on its devices. Samsung is contractually bound to include these apps, which means the phone must host two versions each time: two app stores, two browsers, two voice assistants, or even two messaging apps.

Storage-intensive pre-installed apps

For other pre-installed applications, such as Messenger, Facebook, Samsung sells the space of its devices via software. Apps like Instagram, Netflix or Spotify prefer to be installed directly on a phone. According technical art, this allows apps to gain more intrusive policy permissions not granted through Google Play, allowing them to spy on users more effectively. More intrusive but also more memory intensive.

Finally, Samsung does not use the storage distribution system called the A/B system, used for example by the Pixel 7. This allows the phone to continue working during an update and have a backup of your data if the update fails.

Samsung is the only brand running Android that doesn’t use it despite Google’s foot calls.
