Been to Le Nouveau Duluth? No? Well, actually, no one knows the “best restaurant in Montreal” according to TripAdvisor. Even the neighbors don’t know of its existence, as the place sprang from the imagination of a Quebec comedian, Charles Deschamps.
It all starts as a joke. “I was in the basement of a friend who set up a bar and to thank him for his hospitality I created a TripAdvisor account and left him a 5-star rating to tell him that I was simply a good friend,” says the actor. to BFMTV.
a harsh criticism
The New Duluth acquires an incredible dimension, well helped it is true by the little game played by Charles Deschamps and his circle of friends: 80 opinions and as many 5/5.
The comedian, also the co-owner of two bars, is also claiming a tirade against TripAdvisor, whose rating system can make or break reputations with a form of opacity around ratings.
This is not the first time that TripAdvisor has exposed a fake restaurant in spite of itself. In 2017, The Shed at Dulwich became the best restaurant in London without ever serving a dish.
Asked by Radio Canada about Le Nouveau Duluth, TripAdvisor began deleting the site’s page and assured that these types of cases “are rare and do not present the same characteristics of a real case of fraud.”
