Who is Preligens, the company whose AI detects military movements for the French army?

The use of artificial intelligence in the military field has become a big international issue and companies like Preligens have understood it well.

“There is no artificial intelligence without a human being behind it,” explains Renaud Allioux, co-founder of Preligens, a guest on the Tech&Co set. Preligens is a company specializing in the use of artificial intelligence to process large amounts of data for military purposes.

Therefore, artificial intelligence (AI) is at the heart of the Preligens system. Last October, the company won a contract worth 240 million euros from the General Directorate of Armaments (DGA) for the use of its technology.

For example, its AI system is used for site surveillance to detect planes, ships and report suspicious activity. The AI is capable of counting the number of aircraft, detecting an abnormal situation, and sending an alert. An analyst will then connect to where there is an alert and see what is happening.

run simulations

This AI works thanks to deep learning. Preligens subjected its system to a large number of images of ships or aircraft to be able to recognize them down to the type of vessel.

On the other hand, Preligens does not make predictions of military events because all wars are different. “We prefer to talk about simulations”, specifies Renaud Allioux. He believes that each event has its own characteristics. “To make predictions, you would need a lot of data that we don’t have. AI is there mostly to help humans work and improve their access to information.”

However, Preligens can perform simulations proposing various scenarios by analyzing previous and repetitive events. For example, AI can tell if a ship has a certain percentage chance of leaving port within two weeks based on analyzed activities.
