Enthusiasm for generative artificial intelligence (AI) is overwhelming. Within weeks of ChatGPT’s release, everyone is trying to consult the OpenAI chatbot, including writers and screenwriters. Mangaka Eiichirō Oda was no exception. The creator of One Piece asked him to write a new episode of his flagship work, reports the American site Polygon.
At first, the AI imagined a story around the kidnapping of a member of the pirate crew led by Luffy, the hero of the manga. The rest of the team then goes to the rescue of Tony-Tony Chopper and faces a new enemy called the Shadow King.
Save a planet from a spaceship
Not enthusiastic about this rather classic scenario, Eiichirō Oda confronted ChatGPT with his creation, asking him to write a “more interesting” story. It is from this moment that things go wrong, for the Straw Hats, the name of the crew whose adventures the manga tells.
This time, the pirates spot an alien stowaway on their ship. This new character will ask for help from Captain Luffy (always prone to fight for people he barely knows) to defeat an evil spaceship that has attacked his planet.
The heroes then encounter a witch who wants to grab a “star piece” the alien has. However, it is this item that must be used to save the planet from her. The sequel is written: one fight later, the witch is taken down and the alien’s planet can be rebuilt thanks to the famous “star piece”.
Nothing says that Eiichirō Oda will be inspired by this story to conclude his manga. After 25 years of existence, One Piece should soon see its adventure come to an end. Although the mangaka guided his characters in a high-tech city, the possibility of aliens joining the story would be plausible, according to Polygon, but highly uncertain.
