Will the human being of tomorrow have a third robotic arm? According to a Guardian article, that future may not be so far away. Researchers believe that such a human augmentation is on the horizon. Therefore, additional robotic body parts could be designed to enhance our capabilities.
Such a breakthrough could increase our productivity, scientists say. A third arm could, for example, make it possible to “stir the soup while chopping the vegetables,” according to The Guardian, citing Tamar Makin, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at the University of Cambridge in the UK.
The idea is not so crazy since a similar project has already seen the light. Designer Dani Clode, who also works at Cambridge University, has already created a 3D-printed thumb that can be placed on either hand. A member that, for example, could be useful for a server that has multiple dishes.
more capabilities
Surgeons, electrical engineers, builders, these additional robotic limbs would help many professions according to the team of scientists. The latter suggest that these human augmentations are not used simply to replace a limb, but to provide additional abilities.
In addition, the researchers want these human augmentations not to detract from the initial abilities of those who wear them, and that they have “the least possible impact for the greatest gain”, according to Dani Clode. To do this, they should not be operated by hand as you would with a shovel.
For example, as for the 3D thumb developed by Dani Clode, it is connected to pressure sensors placed under the two big toes, which allow it to be controlled. Laboratories have considered using electrodes on the brain or spinal cord, but this could raise ethical issues, according to Tara Makin.
