The production and distribution group MK2 will launch a paid offer to watch auteur films online on Thursday, three years after launching a free ad-supported offer, in an already very crowded market.
The MK2 Curiosity offer, at 5.99 euros per month without commitment after an introductory period at 2.99 euros, will give access to a catalog of 400 films. It adds to the existing free offer, and its three movies per week.
Aimed at moviegoers, MK2 Curiosity promises a presentation “edited by human programmers, with review texts, anecdotes that make you want to discover the movies, instead of an algorithm,” Nathanaël Karmitz, one of the group’s leaders, told AFP. . .
One million unique visitors
“We are not competitors” or cinemas or large platforms like Netflix, he adds: “some cinema cannot find an online site” today, and MK2 Curiosity “is a pure proposal, without spending four hours looking for what we are going to”. to do, in the midst of 4,000 films”.
The films will come from the MK2 catalog and other independent companies. MK2 Curiosity will broadcast in March both the sketch film hamburger movie sandwich from the creator of Blues Brothers John Landis, one of Xavier Dolan’s last films, just the end of the world or more committed films, such as illegal work The Pole Jerzy Skolimowski with Jeremy Irons.
The group claims “more than a million unique visitors” on its platform over three years, and sets no targets with this new service. In recent years, many small video platforms have launched into the cinephilia niche, such as FilmoTV, Mubi, Cinetek or Universciné.
The French streaming market, largely dominated by Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+, shows “the first signs of slowing down”, according to the latest Vod report prepared by the CNC. But if these giants tend to level off or slow down, the use of French platforms, which is still very minor, is advancing, especially for the most “specialized and focused”.
