Who has not experienced an awkward group chat on WhatsApp? After the excitement of the first messages, silence falls: and now a new group conversation is added to the list of your inactive exchanges.
The message (and the frustration) was well received by WhatsApp. The instant messaging application, owned by Facebook, is currently testing the possibility of giving an expiration date to a chat group that it wants to be temporary, Frandroid has detected.
This new feature, called “expiring groups”, is available in the latest beta version of WhatsApp on iOS, distributed through the channel test flight from Apple, again according to Frandroid.
Visible from the information of a certain group, it allows selecting an expiration date, between “one day”, “one week” or “a personalized date”.
The deletion will not be automatic
Despite the use of this function, the deletion of the group will not be automatic. When the deadline is reached, the app will only ask the user who set it up if they want to stay in the conversation. Other users won’t know, enough to avoid getting mad at some distant cousins.
On average, a French user is present in 4.6 WhatsApp groups, at the beginning of March IFOP study with Lemon. A third of the respondents even confirm that they belong to five or more groups.
