A Xiaomi smartphone could soon detect lies

Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has obtained a patent for lie detection technology using a smartphone camera.

Go to the detector… of the camera. This is what could happen soon if you lie. The smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has obtained a patent for a lie detection system through the camera of a mobile terminal, reports IT Home discovered by specialized site frandroid.

As the document specifies, it is a “polygraphic method” capable of knowing if a person is lying. And for that one of the sensors of the photographic module would be used.

The telephoto lens, which is mainly used for zooming, could automatically frame the face of the person in front of you and analyze the slightest movement. The onboard software would then analyze the images according to pre-defined parameters to render its verdict.

The technology to know if you are lying

The patent specifies that it is the wards who would betray the person. Following them carefully would allow you to know if you are dealing with a liar or a liar.

At the moment, no device is being developed. This is just for Xiaomi to protect his idea and his eventual invention. It is not certain that it is integrated into a smartphone, the document speaks of a “mobile device and storage medium”. It remains to be seen who the final product is actually intended for. It seems made for the authorities or to replace the usual polygraphs that are capable of detecting your physiological values.

Therefore, technology could be the lie detector of tomorrow. Because the detection of faces and expressions is not new, either using surveillance cameras or smartphones. In Israel, researchers at Tel Aviv University have trained artificial intelligence to detect facial muscle movements when someone is lying. And there would be two types of liars: those who activate their cheek muscles while lying down, and those who use their eyebrow muscles.

The algorithm ran tests on a sample of participants who were asked to lie or not. And it got a 73% success rate when all the participants between them failed to detect the true from the false.
