‘They’ll spend less time on TikTok’: Ohio wants to increase work time for teens

The northern US state wants to allow 14- and 15-year-olds to work longer. And lawmakers see that as good news: They’ll spend less time on TikTok.

TikTok has visibly become an obsession for US rulers. In Ohio, lawmakers want to increase work hours for 14- and 15-year-olds, always keeping the spectrum of Chinese law enforcement in mind.

Until 9:00 p.m.

In practice, adolescents of this age can work at night after school until 7:00 p.m. and until 9:00 p.m. in summer. The bill will allow them to work year-round until 9 p.m.

The question of the time that children and adolescents spend on social networks is a matter of great concern, particularly in the United States. Also in Ohio, the state governor has proposed an ordinance that requires minors under the age of 16 to get parental approval to open a social media account.

TikTok is a particularly sensitive topic in the United States. Accused of serving as a spy agent for China, the platform could end up being banned from the country. It is also in the crosshairs of the European authorities, and is the subject of a commission of inquiry in the Senate.
