The first computer mouse, which inspired Steve Jobs, sold for 167,000 euros at auction

This device, invented by American engineer Douglas Engelbart, and first introduced in San Francisco in 1968, has shaped modern computing.

She was a source of inspiration for Steve Jobs in the beginnings of Apple, when designing the first Macintosh: a computer mouse was auctioned on March 16 for an amount of 167,000 euros (178,936 dollars), announced the auction house RR Auction. Created by computer pioneer Douglas Engelbart, the accessory was sold during a sale held on Thursday, March 16.

A crucial role in the evolution of computing

Rather rustic, this three-button wooden computer mouse uses two metal wheels, corresponding to the X axis and Y axis, instead of a ball or LED light like current models have. By the way, the computer mouse was sold together with a coding keyboard also created by Douglas Engelbart.

These two devices were first presented on December 9, 1968 in San Francisco. During this demonstration, douglas engelbart projected for the first time in front of an audience a videoconference link using the mouse. Nicknamed “the mother of all demonstrations”, (“Mother of all demos”), this event laid the foundation for modern computing hardware.

However, it took more than a decade for Douglas Engelbart’s ideas to infuse the world of computing, thanks in part to Steve Jobs, who took over certain functions developed by the American engineer to shape his Apple computers.
