Luxury car manufacturer Ferrari has announced that it has been the target of a cyberattack targeting sensitive customer data around the world based on ransomware, malware that encrypts its target’s data and demands money to unlock it. Ferrari “recently received a ransom demand regarding certain contact details of its customers,” the manufacturer said in a statement late Monday.
The hackers “had access to certain data related to our customers, such as names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers, but not bank details,” a Ferrari spokesperson told AFP on Tuesday.
“In principle, Ferrari will not accept” paying a ransom “because paying such demands would finance criminal activities and allow threat actors to perpetuate their attacks,” the manufacturer notes. This cyberattack “had no impact on the operations of our company,” says Ferrari.
Upon receiving the ransom demand, “we immediately launched an investigation in cooperation with a leading international cybersecurity company” and “informed the competent authorities,” the manufacturer adds.
The CEO Benedetto Vigna sent a letter to the clients of the prestigious Cavallino Rampante brand informing them of the incident. The manufacturer delivered a total of 13,221 cars worldwide last year, up 18.5%.
