Russia: Vladimir Putin’s entourage no longer has an iPhone

According to the Kommersant newspaper, the Kremlin has asked all employees of the internal political bloc of the presidential administration to exchange their iPhones for smartphones of different brands.

In early March, a seminar was organized in the Moscow region. The goal: to ensure that all people working in national and regional political bodies do without the Apple smartphone. According to several sources from the Russian media Kommersant, after attending the event, the government invites them to “get rid of the iPhone, throw it away or give it to children.”

“The iOS” Russian”

The complaints of the participants in the seminar would have begun to explode before the intervention of Sergueï Kirienko, supervisor of domestic policy, who gives his officials until April 1 to change their telephone number. The Kremlin could provide new devices to employees primarily involved in the 2024 presidential campaign. The government would recommend buying phones with Android operating system or Chinese smartphones.

According to Kommersant media sources, the obligation to abandon the iPhone would be due to security problems. The Russian government believes that Apple products are more susceptible to hacking and spying by Westerners than other smartphones.

It is in this logic that Russia decided to develop its own operating system for smartphones called Aurora. The government is in talks with the main players in the mobile market to try to create “state technology sovereignty through a secure mobile environment.”
