For users, the main novelty concerns the arrival of advertising directly in the middle of the search results. Therefore, when an internet user enters keywords to find posts, they could now be faced with sponsored content.
Instagram is also announcing a second new ad format, dedicated to events. Internet users interested in announcing a live broadcast, for example a concert or a sporting event, will be able to choose to receive a reminder at the beginning of the event.
Deployment in the coming months
As the company specifies on its site, these new features are currently in the testing phase. They are intended to be deployed around the world in the coming months.
Search results have so far been one of the few digital places where Instagram doesn’t run ads. All its formats -classic publications, stories or reels- now alternate between selected contents by application algorithms and trade publications. End of 2022, Instagram also announced the arrival of advertising content directly to the user profile.
This expansion of commercial formats could be explained by Instagram’s difficulties compared to its main competitor, TikTok, now largely favored by young users: in the West, the latter now spend twice as long on the Chinese platform than on its American rival. The arrival of advertising in the search results of Instagram is as much less innocuous as it is now TikTok teens favorite search engine.
