How Sorare manages to democratize NFTs through sports

The French start-up now has more than 3 million subscribers. Antoine Griezmann, Lionel Messi or Serena Williams are among the company’s shareholders.

There were Panini cards, today there are Sorare cards. Collect, trade, buy: the sports cards offered by the French company have fascinated sports fans since 2018.

And within the framework of the Paris Blockchain Week that is currently taking place in , Brian O’Hagan, Sorare’s head of growth, spoke again about the company’s development at Tech&Co.

Connect fans and athletes

Sorare’s principle is simple and is based according to Brian O’Hagan on three principles: a passion for collecting, a passion for the game (Sorare is based on a Fantasy Football game) and a community experience.

And to achieve this, Sorare has alliances with several of the main professional sports leagues, such as the Premier League (soccer), the NBA (basketball) and the NLB (baseball). “Everything we do is officially licensed, with the agreement of rights holders, leagues, federations and athletes,” says Brian O’Hagan.

Cards at 600,000 euros

Some athletes have even chosen to invest in the company, such as the soccer players Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, but also the American tennis player Serena Williams. According to Brian O’Hagan, “athletes are even part of the company’s virtuous circle.” The French footballer had even made a name for himself by buying the Sorare card from his friend from the French team, Kylian Mbappé, for 70,000 euros.

The rarest and most requested cards, making use of the law of supply and demand, can be sold for up to 600,000 euros, according to company data. But Brian O’Hagan indicates nonetheless that Sorare is still accessible to everyone.

To other sports?

And the NFTs in all this? For Sorare’s growth manager, this technology is not at the heart of the company. “This technology is at the service of experience. But we don’t want users to need to understand what blockchain is to use Sorare.” The company’s goal is above all to create a profitable business, “paying attention to costs and having financial discipline.”

Ultimately, Sorare wants above all to expand its community, estimated at 3 million players today, with more than 500,000 new ones registered in December 2022 alone, especially abroad. With the purchase of the Premier League license for 37 million euros and that of the American baseball league, the goal is to develop in England and the United States.

With the promise of placing the hook in new disciplines? “By 2023 we want to consolidate our three sports and maybe in the long term we will develop in other sports”, admits Brian O’Hagan.
