Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak…: personalities call for a six-month moratorium on AI

An open letter signed by more than 1,100 people calls for an immediate pause in projects around artificial intelligence, the time to train more efficient systems.

GPT-4 may still be new, but it is not suitable for the 1,100 signatories of an open letter. In this text, digital experts, but also anonymous people, call on specialized artificial intelligence laboratories to stop their work for a while.

Elon Musk or Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak believe a break of at least six months is necessary. According to them, this moratorium should make it possible to train AI systems even more efficient than GPT-4, the most powerful model made public to date.

Automation of human functions.

Among other questions, digital specialists raise the question of a possible automation of functions that are currently performed by very real people. “Should we develop non-human minds that may one day outnumber and cunningly outgrow and replace us?” they write.

This move comes at a time when a report from the US bank Goldman Sachs is sounding the alarm. He claims that artificial intelligence, and in particular these text or image generation models, could replace 300 million jobs worldwide. Or a quarter of global activity.
