Google Drive adds storage limit, even for paid users

Google’s hosting platform quietly introduced a limit on the number of files stored online, even for paid accounts.

It is now impossible to create more than 5 million files on Google Drive, we learn from the Arstechnica site.

The site caught it after Reddit users complained about posts asking them to permanently delete from their account. Storage space (and its junk) millions of files to comply with this limitation, which was not listed and not announced by Google.

Files created by a user and not in total

Google Workplace business accounts and the Google One storage service for individuals are also affected. These paid subscriptions (up to 150 euros per month for Google One) have so far only indicated a storage limit of 5 Terabits and 30 Terabits respectively.

It’s also impossible to share more than 400,000 files on Google Drive, but this limit has been known for a long time and can be circumvented by removing the sharing option on certain files, Arstechnica notes again.

Since then, the platform has confirmed the implementation of this measure, specifying that it is “a device to prevent misuse of the system that could affect its stability and security” that would only affect an infinitesimal number of users.

Google clarified that this is a limit to the content created by a given user on a drive, not the total number of files it can contain. This distinction can be useful for users who share their storage space between multiple accounts.
