‘Not an April Fool’: Asus announces its first ROG Ally portable console

Unveiled on April 1, the ROG Ally portable console is real. Asus had to confirm the existence of its product intended for PC gamers who want to enjoy their passion on the go.

What an idea to make a big announcement on April 1st! It is usually the worst day to be credible, even a few days before. Dyson also paid the price by introducing its air-purifying headphones, many fooling people into April. Asus used the same recipe to launch its new product.

On April 1, the Taiwanese brand posted a message on Twitter introducing “its first handheld console” called ROG Ally and promised PC gaming on the go before revealing a video.

A product to compete with the champion Steam Deck

Bad day to introduce a product that looks like the blank Steam Deck and is believable. And yet it’s a real first for the computer hardware specialist, and for ROG, its gaming range. The formalization was made two days later, with Asus even having to specify that “it is not an April Fools’ joke.”

If we don’t know much about this revealed Steam Deck competitor, released with fanfare in 2021 and sparking a new market for video games, Asus has nevertheless slipped some information. We know that the portable console will run on Windows 11 and will ship with Xbox Game Pass (subscription not included). Youtubeur Dave2D subsequently posted a video on his channel to reveal the beast in preview.

There we also found out about the device that takes the format of the Nintendo Switch, the detachable joysticks in less, with two asymmetrical sticks, a multidirectional cross and control buttons. Its 7-inch Full HD display in 16:9 and 1080p shows a 120Hz refresh rate when Valve’s Steam Deck is content with 60Hz. Overall, the Youtuber explains that the display capabilities are clearly superior elsewhere with a brighter, more responsive display. .

Inside, the ROG Ally has power to spare both graphically and in performance (AMD Zen 4 chip), as the console promises to run the entire catalog of next-gen PC games. A more powerful device than the most powerful on the market that had questioned its real existence. And yet it’s there to want to compete with the future Logitech G Cloud and other Razer Edges.

It remains to be known the price remains mysterious. The Steam Deck went on sale for 500 euros, a fairly high price compared to the competition that came later. But he was able to find his fans despite his few flaws.
