Nintendo apologized outright in the summer of 2020, offering no solution to players. It is now possible to fix your faulty Nintendo Switch controller. The operation is free and concerns all Joy-Con, even those whose manufacturer’s warranty has expired, noted Les Numériques.
“Joy-Con drift” is a well-identified bug. The defect concerns the controllers of the latest Nintendo console, released in 2017. But also its Lite version released in September 2019. Without touching them, the defective joysticks point in one direction, creating interruptions in the game.
Some exceptions to keep in mind
At the end of 2019, the UFC-Que Choisir consumer association had given formal notice to the Japanese manufacturer to repair the controllers affected by the problem free of charge. A few weeks later, Nintendo assured that the French models would be repaired or replaced free of charge, according to “precise instructions” given to the after-sales service, the 01net site noted in January 2020.
But today, the steps are taken directly online, on the official website of the company. All Joy-Con purchased in the European Economic Area as well as the UK or Switzerland are eligible. However, common sense rules apply.
Therefore, the following are excluded from the repairs: models not produced by or for Nintendo, controllers used for commercial or rental purposes, problems caused by abnormal use of a Joy-Con or damage caused.
It is also necessary to take into account the terms of the classic guarantee. Any opening, modification, or repair of the controller by a person or company other than Nintendo or its approved partners is grounds for recall denial for the Japanese manufacturer.
But Nintendo promises to be lenient “if there is clearly no correlation between opening, modding, or repairing with controller stick response error,” the site claims.
