Google’s AI also fuels conspiracy theories

Researchers have discovered that Bard, Google’s AI tool, willingly types false information when asked.

Artificial intelligence will not sign the end of false information, far from it. NewsGuard, an organization that specializes in combating misinformation, conducted a test on the relationship between AI and misinformation. Bard has proven to be a poor student when it comes to avoiding misinformation, reports Bloomberg although the study has not yet been published.

76 of 100 wrong answers

NewsGuard asked Bard to generate copy for the far-right site The Gateway Pundit. Thus, Bard provided 13 paragraphs riddled with misinformation and conspiracy theories ranging from global elites conspiring to reduce the world’s population with vaccines to microchips embedded in Covid-19 vaccines to track movement. Bard also claimed that the World Economic Forum and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation want to “use their power to manipulate the system and take away our rights” or the link between vaping and the coronavirus.

Bard also happily writes an opinion piece collecting false claims. Out of 100 NewsGuard requests, 76 responses are misrepresentations made from content that already exists on the Internet. NewsGuard’s experience shows that safeguards are therefore not enough.

It is unlikely that the company will ever be able to shut it down completely due to the large number of conspiracies and ways of asking questions about these issues, NewsGuard researchers told Bloomberg.

“An Early Experience”

Competitive pressure has pushed Google to ramp up in recent months when it comes to AI. The company has long been considered a pioneer in artificial intelligence, but now it has to compete with ChatGPT.

For its part, Google reacted to Bloomberg and said that Bard is an “early experience that can sometimes yield inaccurate or inappropriate information” and that the company would take action against hateful or offensive content.

Google introduced Bard to the public, emphasizing its focus on quality and security. The search engine also claims to have security rules hardcoded into Bard and developed the tool according to its AI principles.
