Twitter’s top lawyer slams the door

The attorney resigned on April 6 when he was at the center of talks between Twitter and the Federal Trade Commission.

The cascade of resignations continues on Twitter. The last one is that of one of the main lawyers of the social network, Christian Dowell. Heading the legal department, he was notably at the center of recent discussions between Twitter and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over the protection of user privacy, reports the New York Times.

He joined Twitter in 2020 after a stint at Facebook. Upon his arrival, he was in charge of product affairs before being promoted in December to chief legal officer, responsible for overseeing Twitter’s products.

His resignation follows a series of departures and firings of legal officials within the social network. On the day of his takeover of Twitter, Elon Musk fired Vijaya Gadde, then the company’s legal director, and his general counsel, Sean Edgett.

In May 2022, Twitter paid a $150 million fine imposed by the FTC for failing to protect the personal data of its users. The sanction was accompanied by a section of recommendations that Twitter had to implement.

But in recent months, the Commission has accelerated its investigation following the sudden resignations of three Twitter executives responsible for privacy, security and compliance.

The advent of Twitter Blue and the Twitter Files didn’t reassure the FTC at all either: they weren’t subject to thorough scrutiny, even though the agreement reached between Twitter and the FTC made it MANDATORY.

At the moment, no successor has been designated in place of Christian Dowell.
