Amazon: a manufacturer of food supplements condemned for having deceived its customers

The Bountiful Company was fined $600,000 for misleading consumers into thinking its products were more popular than they actually were.

Having an SEO advantage on the Amazon site guarantees the success of a product, but it can also be expensive. The Bountiful Company was recently singled out by the US Federal Trade Agency (FTC) and fined $600,000 for misleading consumers, US site Engadget has discovered.

The manufacturer used a function of the online sales site to highlight several of its food supplement references in order to promote different products. Sellers have the option of offering buyers similar SKUs, often in different sizes or colors, but they should remain fairly similar categories.

The Bountiful Company, acquired for nearly $6 billion in 2021 by Nestlé, has fully benefited from the age of some of its best-selling products. By its own admission in an internal email, the manufacturer complained that “people didn’t like” its new references. But he said at the same time that sales “exploded as soon as we turned the pages.”

But this trick is considered a hoax since the positive reviews of a specific article, and the resulting SEO, are used to push another article with different wording.

“Promoting one’s products by hijacking another product’s ratings or reviews is a relatively new tactic, but it’s still false advertising outright,” said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Office of Consumer Protection.
