Artist Gets Copyright for AI-Generated Graphic Novel

The rapid emergence of software capable of producing veritable works of art from keywords could radically transform the art world.

This is probably the first, according to the specialized site Ars Technica. An American artist has obtained a copyright (a property right similar to French copyright) for a graphic novel created by artificial intelligence (AI).

On Instagram, Kris Kashtanova published the favorable response to her application for registration with the US authority.

Midjourney is one of the leading tools for generating images from keywords or simple expressions, and sometimes delivers impressive results.

However, the artist clarified that his graphic novel was not created entirely by AI, but that it helped, in the sense that Kashtanova wrote the story of his comic, created the design…

a loophole

The question of intellectual property of AI-generated images, as software proliferates, remains a hot topic in the art world. Fearing legal problems, the famous Getty image bank has decided to ban images generated by artificial intelligence.

Its main competitor, Shutterstock, has also started removing visuals from Midjourney or competitors like DALL-E or Starry AI from its image bank. Before you obviously change your mind…

The jurisprudence is still empty on the issue of copyright, but regulations will undoubtedly appear in the United States as well as in Europe.

Meanwhile, Kris Kashtanova’s graphic novel, titled zarya of dawnis freely available on the artist’s Instagram account.
