Mixed reality headset, MacBook: what Apple expected to announce in June

WWDC 2023, Apple’s developer conference, could be much more dense than expected. According bloomberg, Apple could introduce not only its mixed reality headset, but also Mac

The mixed reality headset will be the big star of WWDC 2023, Apple’s global developer conference. But you shouldn’t be the only one parading through the bays of Apple Park, which hosts the event from June 5-9. According to Mark Gurman, the journalist from Bloomberg specialized in the brand, the program of the annual meeting would be particularly rich in news to look forward to.

If the WWDC is in general the opportunity to discover the next advances in the operating systems of iPhone (iOS), iPad (iPadOS), Apple Watch (watchOS), Apple TV (tvOS) and other Mac (macOS). And on some rare occasions, we’ve seen products like the new MacBook Pro, truly professional computers (iMac Pro), or sometimes the iPad Pro flourish, all with the intention of making developers want to build for the Apple ecosystem.

A “clear” message on the helmet to pass

The conference was also an opportunity to discover new products long before they were launched on the market, in order to stimulate the creativity and curiosity of the first interested parties. This was the case with the HomePod or the Mac Pro. This will likely be the case with the mixed reality headset that the invitation, with its rainbow bows, looked like. puzzle giving an impression of lentils. Long awaited, it should finally make its official appearance, with WWDC being the perfect place for a first presentation and to make developers want to work for it.

And with the headset, whispered under the name of RealityPro, it’s an expensive new universe that could open up to Apple. According to Mark Gurman, the Californian company would have refined its message so that it is “clear” for developers “about how they will want to use it”, beyond the iPhone from which it is intended to distinguish itself. The conference should also serve to present in more depth the dedicated App Store that will be integrated into the helmet, the tools that will accompany it, but also and above all, xrOS, the operating system created for the occasion and its interface. A situation that would allow the headset to be the star of the show without overshadowing a new iPhone if it had been unveiled in September or any new mainstream PC launch in October.

A bigger MacBook Air

Because while the Mac should also be in the spotlight in June, it won’t be to act as a tech showcase. We know that the brand has several computers in the drawers. We are talking about a 15-inch MacBook Air, a more basic version of the MacBook Pro 13, the arrival of the Mac Pro (computer column) with internal M chips to stop being the latest under Intel. Added to this would be updates to the 13-inch MacBook Air, the colorful 24-inch iMac, the Mac Studio (the compact and powerful model) or even several 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Not all of them will be there, but the new, bigger and more powerful MacBook Air is likely to be introduced. It probably won’t run on an M3 chip – it’s pretty uncertain if there’s already a new version – but on an optimized M2 version.

Apple experienced a significant drop in Mac sales for the first time in 22 years (-40%), due in particular to component shortages, but also to rising prices due to the strength of the dollar against the euro and other currencies. .

We expect few revolutionary news with the next iOS 17, except for the possible announcement of an opening to other stores in parallel to the App Store. For Mark Gurman, all eyes will be on watchOS 10, which should centralize most of the new features. The connected watch’s operating system is due for a facelift and undergoes its biggest overhaul since its launch in 2015. Apple would therefore be looking to make up for hardware advances that are rumored to be minimal in the next version of Apple Watch.
