‘It is not a threat to creativity’: the author of the awarded photo assumes the use of AI to generate it

Boris Eldagsen won, then turned down, first prize in a prestigious photography competition. His work, generated by artificial intelligence, is at the center of the debate.

Accused of having “deceived” his world, German artist Boris Eldagsen has hit back at the World Photography Organization, reports the British newspaper The Guardian. As his AI-generated photo won prizes at the Sony World Photography Awards, the artist saw his relationship with the organizing committee deteriorate.

The latter, in fact, has issued a statement stating that “[n’arrivent] more to engage with him in a relevant and constructive conversation.” During this ceremony, the artist refused the award to him before revealing the true nature of his work.

Eldagsen’s blog now reads “Dear Sony World Photography Awards, stop talking nonsense and join the discussions that really matter!” With the guardianthe artist claims to understand Sony’s position.

“I don’t know why they reacted this way, but I have a good idea: they felt cheated and their artistic judgment was questioned. If you can’t tell the difference between a photograph and an image generated by artificial intelligence, then he might as well go home,” he told the British newspaper. A statement that is part of the initiative of the artist, who claims he wanted to show that neither the juries most prestigious in their field are capable of making this difference.

“I love photography. I love AI-generated images, but I realized that it is not the same. One is written with light, the other is written with words. They are connected: the visual language was learned through photography, but today artificial intelligence is self-sufficient. If people want to deny this fact, it is a mistake”, continues the artist.

“It’s liberating”

Au coeur du débat, une mésentente s’est formedée between the two interlocutors: alors qu’Eldagsen affirms ne pas avoir mentionné l’assistance de l’intelligence artificielle pour creer son oeuvre, Sony affirms de son côté que les juges en ont été informés From the beginning.

Despite everything, the category in which Eldagsen was competing did not prohibit using different methods to produce a work -artificial intelligence included-.
