Stable Diffusion publishes its free and open source version of ChatGPT

Already known for its image generators, Stability AI will now offer a text version on the same model as ChatGPT.

Far from the tech giants, it is a name that has made a name for itself in the world of generative artificial intelligence. Stability AI, the creator of the Stable Diffusion model, has announced the release of StableLM, its model for text generation.

Specificity of the tool, it will be free and open source, as Stable Diffusion already was, the image generation model that arrived last year. Stability AI has trained its “internal ChatGPT” on an 800GB database and promises to provide details on this data soon.

The first tests carried out by Tech&Co show a still rudimentary tool facing the powerful competition of OpenAI or Google. But it’s also like Stable Diffusion, which still doesn’t let you create amazing images compared to Midjourney for example.

Light

Even so, the interest of this version is to be free and open source to be able to improve it easily. Above all, the number of parameters used is minuscule: 7 billion against 1000 billion for GPT-4. A gap that is also explained by the necessary computing power that requires heavy investments in servers. Therefore, the rise in power will be more gradual.

The arrival of ChatGPT last November led to a real race between the technological giants to follow in the footsteps of OpenAI, sparking new ethical debates on the use of these artificial intelligences.
