Snapchat boss ‘would love’ to see TikTok banned

After the small provocation, Evan Spiegel still slipped that the ban on his rival would also be a worrying development for the technological ecosystem.

Of course, there was a bit of humor in this outing. But also a lot of frankness. Asked about a possible ban from his rival TikTok, the Snapchat boss did not pretend: “We would love that,” he launched, to applause, during the Snap Partner Summit.

The little phrase illustrates the difficulties of the social network, which is struggling to find its profitability, heavily competed by the TikTok tidal wave.

“It’s important that we be thoughtful and really develop a regulatory framework to address security issues, especially around technology,” insisted Evan Spiegel. “There are legitimate national security concerns well above my salary level,” he also joked when asked about it.

Worrying?

After the small provocation, Evan Spiegel still slipped that the rival’s ban would also be a worrying development for the technological ecosystem.

TikTok is in the crosshairs of the US authorities, who see the platform as a potential espionage agent for the Chinese state. In recent months, the idea of a ban in the United States has gained considerable momentum. Similarly, many international institutions, including in Europe, have asked their employees to stop using TikTok.

For its part, Snapchat continues to struggle to find profitability. However, during the Snap Partner Summit, the head of the social network declared that it had reached three million paying subscribers. In addition, he announced that the “virtual friend”, based on artificial intelligence, will now be available to all users.
