Elon Musk had promised it several times, now it is a reality. Twitter began this Thursday, May 20, to retire the “old” certification badges, those obtained before the creation of the Twitter Blue subscription.
As of now, the only blue badges visible on the networks are those of accounts that have paid for a Twitter Blue subscription. However, they are not accompanied by any identity verification process, unlike the historical certification badges, which are awarded – among others – to politicians, stars, activists or journalists to fight against misinformation and identity theft.
Many accounts are affected by this removal, even among the most followed. Stars ranging from Kim Kardashian to Justin Bieber have seen their blue markings disappear, as have political figures ranging from Donald Trump to Pope Francis and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
An old “corrupted” system according to Elon Musk
Twitter had communicated the date of April 20 for the disappearance of these badges, after Elon Musk first mentioned the date of April 1. However, for a few days, the confusion had settled on the platform, which no longer allowed to differentiate between the badges associated with the simple payment of ten euros per month and the blue check marks linked to the authentication of the ‘user’.
With the old process, Twitter decided whether or not to award a certification badge to a user at risk of identity theft for free by requiring the transmission of an identity document. Elon Musk had regularly criticized this process, believing it favored an “elite” and represented a caste system.corruptseparating “lords and peasants”.
