A Chinese collector, whose identity is unknown, on April 16 completed the highest purchase in the history of the popular online first-person shooter, counter strike global offensive (CS:GO).
He offered himself a “skin,” an item intended to modify the appearance of weapons in the game, Business Insider reports. It is an “AK-47 Case Hardened” at $400,000 (365,000 euros), with the specific pattern 661 Blue Gem. A prize that includes the four “Holographic Titan” stickers, commemorative of a tournament CS:GO held in 2014 in Katowice, estimated at $60,000 each.
A particularly rare item, not least because, apart from being resold to players, it’s only found in Loot Boxes, these paid “jack-in-the-boxes” whose contents are generally unknown until they’re opened.
The item estimated at the highest price in the history of counter strike global offensive Today, the Blue Gem Karambit knife remains, valued at 1.5 million dollars, but has never been sold, recalls the specialized media Tom’s Guide.
A flourishing market
With the recent announcement of the next counterattack, the prices of the most emblematic “skins” have skyrocketed. In addition to being considered, for some, as virtual collectibles, these will be transferable to the next work of the online game that Valve publishes.
So many factors that push regular players to spend thousands, even tens of thousands of euros to get them. The title has also just broken its own attendance record, with a peak of 1.4 million players gathering at the same time.
Valve has dated Counter Strike 2 for a summer 2023 release, promising one of the “greatest technical breakthroughs in its entire history.” It will be available for free and will come as a full update to the current title, allowing players to keep their accounts and game history.
