Despite the end of the historic blue badges, Twitter’s paid offer is still a failure

There’s no enthusiastic move from the end of free certification to paid certification, according to a developer accustomed to issues related to the social network.

As of April 20, Twitter’s historic account certifications – free blue badges associated with identity verification – have been removed, as previously announced by the head of the social network, Elon Musk.

Despite this disappearance of what was considered much more reliable authentication than paid subscriptions (associated with no ID verification), the number of subscriptions, compared to the number of people who lost their credential, has seen very little evolution. .

On the same day that the “certified” free badges ended, fewer than 30 accounts signed up for the Twitter Blue service, according to developer Travis Brown, who regularly analyzes the numbers tied to the platform.

Despite a situation that does not show enthusiasm, the numbers have increased (slightly) in recent days.

“It must have been a great week for Twitter Blue, but so far I’ve only seen an increase of about 12,000 accounts. […] An increase that is based in large part (entirely?) on Musk’s decision to offer thousands of subscriptions, “he added on Sunday, April 23.

Badges distributed without consent

In fact, in addition to the blue badge confusion, several celebrities have reported that they can keep their blue badges anyway without paying. The platform -or Elon Musk- would distribute them to give the illusion of interest on their part.

In his blog, Travis Brown specifies that Twitter does not allow you to define an exhaustive list of all accounts subscribed to Twitter Blue. On the other hand, the information distributed by the platform allows Travis Brown to affirm that he is capable of identifying at least 85% of active subscriptions.

Therefore, he estimates all Twitter Blue subscriptions to be between 615,000 and 650,000 accounts.
