The official announcement was only two weeks away… Google’s new foldable smartphone called the Pixel Fold has already been leaked in a video posted by developer Kuba Wojciechowski on Twitter.
A foldable smartphone similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4
Samsung’s official announcement of the launch of its Galaxy Z Fold 4 in August 2022 seems to have inspired more than one. After Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold, Huawei’s Mate Xs or Oppo’s Find N, it’s Google’s turn to launch with the Pixel Fold.
According to the video leaked two days ago, the new smartphone from the Californian giant looks exactly like the model of its South Korean competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, except for a few details. If the Pixel Fold also folds like a book—vertically—its internal screen doesn’t seem to have any apparent fold in its center. A flaw that has largely fueled consumer skepticism towards new foldable phones hitting the market.
Compared to Samsung’s model, the Pixel Fold would also be much more compact in size and its two flaps would close together more cleanly. According to Google, this hinge would be “the most durable in a folding”.
The official announcement scheduled for May 10
On the technical side, the details are becoming clearer: the Pixel Fold will be equipped with a Tensor G2 processor and a Titan M2 security chip equipped with 12 GB of RAM. The smartphone flaunts a 5.8-inch FHD+ OLED external display and when unfolded, the display measures 7.6-inches diagonally.
It should also be noted that the Google foldable will have a 48 MP rear camera -10.8 MP for “telephoto” and “wide angle” modes -, as well as a battery with an autonomy of almost 24 hours on a single charge.
Obviously, we’ll have to wait until May 10 at the annual Google I/O conference to find out more about the Pixel Fold and clear up the various rumors about it, including the currently estimated price of $1,700.
