VR headsets, MacBook Air: what can we expect from Apple’s WWDC conference?

The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference is organized every year by the Apple firm to bring together iOS developers. It is also an opportunity for Apple to make exclusive announcements. We take stock.

On June 5, Apple, like every year, will honor developers who code from its operating system. If the event is an opportunity for the company to introduce updates to its systems (iOS 17, iPadOS 17, tvOS 17, macOS 14, and watchOS 10), new hardware is also planned for the show.

Apple Reality Pro Headphones: the star of the event

Apple’s desire to embark on virtual reality is coming to fruition and it looks like its mixed reality headset – called Reality Pro – could see the light of day by the end of the year. At WWDC, Apple could present the device and specify its release date and price. The associated operating system (a priori “xrOS”) must logically be presented in detail.

In an article for Bloomberg, brand specialist Mark Gurman specifies that the helmet “will be the star of the event” and some already believe that it has the potential to replace the iPhone in the future. However, the journalist explains that the Reality Pro will not be the only hardware that will be put in the spotlight.

New MacBooks, always bigger

Fans of the brand’s laptops will be delighted: Apple should introduce new models, such as a 15.5-inch MacBook Air, but also a 13.6-inch MacBook Air and a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro. These should be marketed at the end of the year or at the beginning of 2024. On the Mac Studio side (the range located between the Mac Mini and Mac Pro), two other models are also expected, but the completion dates remain more vague. .

However, these new machines that will be presented in June will not have the M3, the latest chip designed by Apple and considered much more efficient. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the production of this new chip should start in the second half. Recently experiencing an unprecedented slowdown in Mac shipments (a 40% drop in Q1), Apple may have wanted to focus more on new product announcements to entice demand.

Mac Pro: you will have to be patient

Apple will be disappointed, too: Many customers expected a new Mac Pro last fall, but the delay has since been set at a year. In fact, the Mac Pro would be absent from WWDC subscribers and we will probably have to wait for the September conference, normally dedicated to the most popular products. This professional Mac won’t have an M3 chip either, but an M2 Ultra with 24 CPU cores, 76 GPU cores, and 192GB of RAM, again in line with analyst expectations.

Fans of the brand, however, were eagerly awaiting the new Mac Pro, which has not evolved since 2019. Apple had explained at the end of 2020 that within two years all its devices would get rid of Intel chips to include proprietary processors.
