The French who got lost Asterix and Obelix: Middle Kingdom in the cinema they will have to be patient before they can see it at home. At least on Netflix. The latest title in the popular comic book franchise won’t hit the platform for at least a year. However, the film, which has made more than 4.6 million admissions in France, is now scheduled on the platform for its arrival on May 19, 2023. Almost everywhere … except France, remember our colleagues from Numerama .
media timeline
Netflix subscribers residing in France still have to deal with the media timeline, a very territory-specific calendar. After its theatrical release, a film is available four months later on video-on-demand services and six months later on Canal+.
Only 15 months have passed since the platform is authorized to offer it in its catalog, and this period only concerns Netflix, the other platforms must wait 17 months. Deadlines that set, therefore, May 2023 for the possible premiere of the film on the streaming platform.
A calendar blur
However, Netflix took the lead in financing part ofAsterix and Obelix: Middle Kingdom. If this gives you rights to the movie’s availability date, these are not the same everywhere. Indeed, with Numerama, Netflix indicated that it had “signed its pre-financing contract before the entry into force of the new media timeline”, which complicates the situation.
The latter was actually changed at the beginning of 2022. According to law enforcement, the availability of the film on the platform is within a period of 15 to 36 months from its theatrical release and therefore could be set for February 2026. Please encourage some impatient people to use a VPN, so they can take advantage of the platform’s foreign catalogue.
In fact, apart from some countries like Switzerland, Germany, Poland or Greece, the majority of Netflix subscribers in the world will be able to enjoy the film. Good news, as the latter has drawn a lot of audiences internationally.
