It was a promise of the Twitter Blue subscription: to see your tweets more prominently, especially in the “For You” newsfeed. This advantage was not yet effective, but Elon Musk announced that the feature was already active. “Verified accounts now have priority,” the Twitter boss tweeted.
Similar to advertising?
Twitter Blue subscribers, by charging the necessary 10 euros, will see that their tweets become a priority. However, no indication has been given as to how this priority access will take place and whether so-called featured tweets will be automatically placed at the top of the feed. But soon a question should arise: can these prioritized tweets in exchange for money be considered advertising?
At the moment, no regulation on this subject has been issued by regulatory bodies such as the Professional Advertising Regulatory Authority (ARPP). But the National Commission for Campaign Accounts and Political Financing (CNCCFP) indicates that the dissemination of advertising on social networks is prohibited in the run-up to an election.
“During the six months prior to the first day of the month of an election and until the date of the return on which it is acquired, the use for electoral propaganda purposes of any commercial advertising process through the press or by any means of the audiovisual communication is prohibited”, indicates the CNCCFP in its candidate guide.
In addition to this new display of tweets, Twitter also announced the effective implementation of the labeling of tweets with content considered hateful. A “Limited visibility: This tweet may violate Twitter’s rules against hateful conduct” message will now be displayed in case of violation, further reducing the visibility of the tweet.
