ChatGPT allowed again in Italy

Italy allows the use of AI ChatGPT conversational again, after blocking it at the end of March.

The ChatGPT artificial intelligence program, blocked a month ago in Italy for violating personal data legislation, is once again authorized on the peninsula, as reported this Friday, April 28 by OpenAI, the company that owns ChatGPT.

Lack of age verification mechanism

The Italian Personal Data Protection Authority had blocked ChatGPT at the end of March, accusing it of not respecting European regulations and of not having a system to verify the age of underage users.

The Authority also criticized ChatGPT for “the absence of an information note for users whose data is collected by OpenAI (…) with the aim of “training” the algorithms that operate the platform.”

In addition, although the program is intended for people over the age of thirteen, “the Authority highlights that the absence of any filter to verify the age of users exposes minors to no response in accordance with their level of development.”

“Steps Forward Accomplished”

OpenAI publie désormais sur son site des informations sur la façon dont il “collecte” et “utilise les données liées à l’entraînement” et ofre une “plus grande visibilité” sur la page d’accueil de ChatGPT et OpenAI de la politique concernant les personal information. The company also claims to have created a tool “to verify the age of users in Italy” once they go online.

The Italian Authority recognized on Friday, April 28, “the advances made to combine technological progress with respect for people’s rights.”

ChatGPT appeared in November and quickly took over with users impressed with its ability to clearly answer difficult questions, write sonnets or write computer code. Funded in particular by the computer giant Microsoft, which has added it to several of its services, it is sometimes presented as a potential competitor to the Google search engine.

On April 13, Spain announced the opening of an investigation into ChatGPT, the day the European Union launched a working group to promote European cooperation on the matter.
