Although the sky in Lyon was fairly clear on Monday, May 1, protesters were quick to wave their umbrellas over their heads. And it was not a preventive measure against a possible rain but a concealment technique from the drones that flew over the Lyon demonstration.
Several videos on social media show Lyon protesters marching equipped with umbrellas. This technique follows the implementation of a decree of the internal security law that allows police to deploy these camera-equipped flying objects during meetings.
Image deletion possible
This use of drones is applied in order to guarantee “the safety of concentrations of people on public roads when they can cause serious disturbances to public order,” according to the decree.
In fact, no objection can be made to the capture of these images by law enforcement drones. But as Tech&Co has explained to you, you can exercise your right of access and deletion of the captured images, by making a request to the police headquarters. It should be noted that the images captured by the drones that fly over the demonstrations are only kept for one week and are deleted after this period.
However, this umbrella technique is not the first to manifest itself. In 2019, the people of Hong Kong kickstarted this trend with an “Umbrella Revolution.” The glitches used mainly allowed protection from police tear gas and projectiles. Therefore, the method had been replicated in other countries, such as in Thailand but also in France, in particular during the demonstrations against the pension reform in 2020 to hide the downgrades.
