The head of the American branch of “security and trust” of the social network TikTok is about to leave, according to the specialized media The Verge. Eric Han had been leading the security teams of the Chinese social network for a few years, and had been appointed, last December, as head of “TikTok US Data Security” (USDS), an entity created especially to reassure the US government. and negotiate that the application is not prohibited in the territory.
He should leave his position on May 12, according to two sources close to the case and an internal note read by the media. The departure of Eric Han is at a crucial moment for the platform, while discontent is growing in several US states for having it banned, either subject to more or less strict conditions or permanently.

The creation of the USDS is intended precisely to calm relations between US federal -or national- institutions and the Chinese application, while increasing tensions between the two countries.
At the moment, no replacement for his position has been formalized. Andy Bonillo, the USDS teams manager, will take his place on an interim basis; However, the social network must comply with the requirements of the US government to name who will officially replace Eric Han.
TikTok’s global trust and safety team is based in Dublin. Hierarchically, it creates and manages security policies for TikTok around the world, then submits them to the USDS, which ensures their enforcement for the US territory.
