After some frankly disappointing first announcements last February, Google is back with artificial intelligence. Within the framework of its traditional developer conference, which begins this Wednesday, May 10, the American group intends to hit hard with a series of announcements on the subject.
Distanced by ChatGPT and its ally Microsoft, Google must respond, especially since the company is not short of arguments. According to information from CNBC, the company should introduce a new large language model (LLM), called PaLM-2, a direct competitor to OpenAI’s GPT-4.
The challenge for Google will obviously be to offer a more advanced and secure LLM than its rival. Thus, it will feed Bard, the internal text generator presented in February, and Search, its historical search engine.
“safe” tools
Following in the wake of Microsoft, Google should also reveal how artificial intelligence will irrigate its entire work environment, from Docs (its online word processor) to Sheets (its online spreadsheet) through Gmail. Microsoft has already introduced its “copilot”, which will greatly increase the possibilities of your internal software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Puzzled by ChatGPT, Google is trying to catch up, but claims to want to release “safe” tools to the general public. Therefore, Bard is only available in the US and UK at the moment. Its access should be extended but not necessarily to France.
Finally, CNBC claims to have pointed out in an internal note a Google image generator program, on the model of Dall-E or Midjourney, without specifying if it will be announced at the conference.
The Google I/O conference can be followed live starting at 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday, May 10 at Tech&Co.
