Smartphones and AI: what to remember from the Google I/O conference

The American group unveiled its latest news this Wednesday for its traditional developer conference.

No surprise announcements for Google. For its developer conference, the tech giant followed up on its widely leaked show, including by itself. Thus, we could already see in Paris in recent days the announcements of the Pixel 7a, and last week its folding smartphone was announced. Here’s what to remember about Google I/O 2023

New additions to the Pixel range

Let’s start with its most spectacular product: Google presented its folding smartphone, the Pixel Fold to compete with the Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold. elegant and with fold that remains very discreet visually, the Pixel Fold will lean heavily on the artificial intelligence of its chip to offer computational photography that will catch up with all your little mistakes and beautify the rendering (eraser to erase annoying elements, tint correction of the photo, the exposure, the blur…).

The other highly anticipated smartphone was the Pixel 7a. Suffice it to say that it is a model that comes to give a very strong blow in the mid-range (with a price of 509 euros in the Google Store).

Tech&Co was able to preview it, go here.

Finally, Google introduced its Pixel Tablet. Its role will be simple: take over the home and be a mobile asset where Google Nest Hub smart displays used to show versatility and serve a key, albeit static, role in the home.

lots of artificial intelligence

It was the heart of the conference, with an expected but notable announcement, the arrival of a new language model in artificial intelligence. Equivalent to OpenAI’s GPT and its ChatGPT, Palm-2 has not revealed many details about its operation but promises to irrigate the entire Google ecosystem, starting with the Search engine, going through Bard, the conversational robot.

Do you want a red bike for mountain descents? Then Bard will find it for you and give you all the advice possible, obviously using all the advertising power of Google. Bard, precisely, will now be available in many countries but not yet in France because it still only works in English.

• Support for developers

Inevitably, the conference was largely dedicated to developers and how they can use it in their coding work. Again, thanks to artificial intelligence. For example, so that the machine finds possible code errors in a few seconds, or comes to optimize the latter.

Some new features for Android 14

Nothing incredible in this sense: you will find new personalization tools for the locked screen, but also to modify the wallpaper of your home screen as you wish. It will also be possible to ask the AI to create your dream wallpaper by styling photos dug up on Google.

Finally, Google takes its “Find My Device” feature up to Apple’s level by now relying on its network of Android devices (millions) to make it easy to locate lost headphones or other items if they’re no longer within reach. This will also work for Tile and Chipolo Bluetooth beacons.
