It is a form of everyday espionage, which has sometimes become commonplace, but which can reveal disturbing situations. In an Ifop survey carried out for the Journal du Geek, we learned that 40% of the French have already consulted the smartphone of one of their partners without their knowledge, at least once in their life. Among them, 19% do it occasionally or regularly. An illegal practice.
Half of young men spy on their wives
To complete this question, the pollsters also asked the French about their current situation, to find out if they continue to spy on their partner’s smartphone without telling them.
In total, a quarter of French people access the content of their spouse’s smartphone without their consent. Although there is a slight prevalence for women (28% versus 23% for men), the phenomenon is reversed among young people.
According to the results, half of young men (18-24 years old) spy on their spouse’s smartphone without their consent. A figure that drops to 36% among young women. Conversely, women over 35 are more likely than men to access their partner’s mobile without their knowledge (24% vs. 17%).

As part of this espionage, the main motivation is to access private conversations, photos or private content on social networks.
Even more worrying, the survey shows a significant prevalence of this digital espionage among victims of physical violence by their partner, with a figure multiplied by two (52% compared to 27% among people who have never been victims of physical violence ).
This prevalence is even higher when it comes to spouses who come to deprive their partner of a mobile phone: 35% of victims of physical violence have had their device confiscated, compared to only 4% among those who have never been victims of said violence.
