Will the actors be optional parts of a film shoot in the coming years? For Tom Hanks, the question arises. Interviewed as part of a podcast by Adam Buxton, the American actor spoke about the evolution of artificial intelligence for cinematographic purposes.
And for him the observation is clear: if an artificial intelligence were to replace an actor in a movie, “people would surely notice, but the question is whether they would care or not.”
AI precursor?
Tom Hanks thus indicates that he is preparing for his career to last until the end of time thanks to artificial intelligence. “I could get hit by a bus tomorrow, but my performances could go on and on.”
Tom Hanks specifically specifies that, for him, the rise of artificial intelligence is not a surprise. In 2004, the actor had already dubbed an animated version of himself in the animated film. The Express Pole, the first film made entirely with motion capture technology. “That movie had a lot of our own data stored on a computer,” the actor explains.
An artistic and legal challenge
However, the actor is concerned about the impact of artificial intelligence on the cultural professions. In the midst of the Writers Guild of America strike, AI is at the center of discussions, accused of replacing American screenwriters in writing movies and series in the future. Tom Hanks thus indicates that discussions are underway to frame AI in the cinematographic world.
“With this degree of realistic quality, it will become an artistic challenge but also a legal one”, emphasizes Tom Hanks, who nevertheless believes that no version of himself could have the same added value in a film.
