The driver’s license goes digital. To drive with a good reputation, its physical version will soon no longer be necessary, be it the old pink card or the new type in bank card format, reports the parisian. All you have to do is import your license into the France Identity app and it will be available even without an internet connection.
Being controlled by the police, renting a car or sharing a car: all this will be possible with the electronic license. Like the dematerialized identity card, it should be generalized by 2024.
It is essential to have dematerialized your identity card
One obligation remains: have a valid identity document and have previously imported it into the France Identity application, which will be available on iOS and Android. Its beta version is already accessible to ten thousand testers, who therefore have a digital duplicate of their national electronic identity document (CNIe). This new identity document equipped with an electronic chip, in bank card format, will therefore be essential.
So there are two possible methods to import your license into the application. It will be possible to use your Restricted Information Declaration (RIR), a document that certifies your right to drive, which can be retrieved on the Télépoints site using your license number. Then simply scan the QR code on the document.
Alternatively, click on “import my driving rights” by remotely consulting the database of the Delegación de Seguridad Vial. Then, even offline, the precious sesame will be visible by going to the “Wallet” tab of the application.
Police, gendarmes, tenants and employers
During roadside checks, for example, the police will be able to check these “rights to drive” on the application. Thanks to their NEO smartphones equipped with an NFC chip reader, the police and gendarmerie can now verify the validity of your license and the fact that they are not looking for you.
To prove your ability to drive with a car rental company or your employer, it will also be possible to edit an online test. This official document can be sent in a few clicks by email or WhatsApp, specifying its recipient. Eventually, it will also be possible to apply for a power of attorney entirely online.
Even so, surely it will continue to be necessary to have the physical version of the driving license, at least to carry out certain procedures, such as renting a vehicle abroad.
The government expects a generalization of the device at the beginning of 2024, a few weeks after the deployment of the dematerialized identity card. The digital vital card should land on the phone at the end of 2025. Digital documents that obviously will not return to the possibility of using the physical versions.
