End of account sharing: Internet users protest Netflix’s decision

Netflix’s announcement about the end of account sharing was not well liked by subscribers and squatters on the platform, who quickly made their discontent known.

What was just a simple announcement quickly turned into a fight over Netflix. The streaming platform now follows the movement started in other countries around the world by introducing the end of account sharing in France. An announcement that obviously did not please Internet users, creating almost a race to see who terminated or abandoned their subscription as quickly as possible.

Therefore, the Netflix announcement tweet became “proportionate”, that is, it received a higher number of (negative) quotes and (just as) responses than classic retweets.

“A completely incomprehensible email”

In the comments, many post screenshots of the termination message from Netflix and explain their situation to understand what will happen to their account. “I don’t live with my parents during the week, do I have to pay extra?”, “I’m on a business trip all year, how do I do it?”. or even “How do we check that our children in study are out of our house? This email is completely incomprehensible” have thus become frequent messages in the responses.

Exceptions well provided for by the platform, which authorizes the use of a third party’s Netflix account, as long as you connect “regularly” to the associated Wi-Fi network in the main focus.

Many Internet users also mention their desire to go out to the competition (increasingly fierce in the streaming market), starting with Amazon Prime Video or Disney+, which -for the moment- do not limit sharing accounts.

Other customers refer to Netflix accounts that have been shared for a long time, with a friend or a previous romantic relationship, and the breaking of that last digital bond.

A 2017 tweet posted by Netflix was also widely highlighted. “Love is an addiction, love is sharing a password” (“Love is an addiction, love is sharing your password”), the platform later tweeted.

A message that is already obsolete since people who are not members of the household will have to pay an extra 5.99 euros per month to have access to the account.
