If you have downloaded this Android app, it is imperative to remove it

Released in September 2021, the iRecorder app is no longer the nice screen recorder. Now spy on Android users who have downloaded it.

A recording taken without your knowledge every quarter of an hour. This is the sad reality of the iRecorder app. Available only on Android phones, this app has changed a lot since it hit the Google Play Store in September 2021.

Originally, iRecorder appeared as a solution to record your phone screen. But in a blog post on the We Live Security site, researcher Lukas Stefanko, specializing in Android security, points to a worrying change in operation after an update in August 2022, reports the specialized site Ars Technica.

Sound recordings every 15 minutes

According to research by Lukas Stefanko, this update has integrated malicious code of the AhMyth type, a kind of remote Trojan horse. With this code, the app is now told to record a one minute sound recording every fifteen minutes and send it to a server of the app designer.

The researcher considers that post-release modifications to the application are among the identified risks. Also, a preventative measure is available since Android version 11 (released in February 2020). It allows you to withdraw authorizations previously granted to an application if it remains unused for a few months, Android specifies. But there’s no guarantee that this feature can’t accommodate the 50,000 people who downloaded iRecorder.
