The US Food and Drug Administration, the FDA, has given Neuralink permission to set up a human clinical trial, Elon Musk’s company announced on Twitter.
brain implant
Neuralink is one of several companies created by Elon Musk. the head of spacex and Tesla quietly released it in 2016, hoping to do brain implants. In practice, Neuralink must design brain-computer interfaces that allow equipment to be controlled remotely simply by thinking.
The applications are numerous. It would be, for example, restoring mobility to paralyzed people, allowing them to interact with their environment or easily manipulate mechanical arms. Implants could also be a solution to neurological disorders, promises Neuralink.
In December, Elon Musk expected human trials “within six months.” Therefore, the calendar is almost respected, since the “recruitment” is not yet open for tests, explains the company, which specifies that it will communicate it later.
At the moment, the tests are only done on animals, but the process poses a problem: by speeding up the experiments to wait for human tests as soon as possible, Neuralink would have resulted in ill-treatment or even death lots of pigs, sheep and monkeys.
The US Department of Transportation has also opened an investigation into Neuralink to find out if the company illegally transported dangerous pathogens.
