Can Twitter and Europe fix things? On Saturday, Elon Musk’s social network decided to drop the EU’s code of conduct against online disinformation. If this departure isn’t necessarily a surprise, it strains relations a bit more between the American billionaire and the European Commission.
Especially since the new European standards, the DSA, intend to force, as soon as they are implemented on August 25, all platforms to actively fight against disinformation.
“Since the end of the summer, it is a set of rules that are imposed on social networks […] with moderation obligations, that is, with the withdrawal of illegal content that is reported to them, with prohibitions such as advertising directed at minors, but also with an imperative obligation, that of actively fighting against disinformation”, he insisted.
Tensions since the takeover
“And it will have to be proven, otherwise very large fines can be imposed. And then, in case of recidivism, a ban on activity in the European Union, ”he insists.
Relations between Musk and Brussels have been far from good since the platform’s acquisition last fall. At the end of October, the European Commissioner Thierry Breton had already warned the businessman that he was making massive cuts, especially in his moderation equipment. “The bird will fly according to our rules,” he warned.
