Meta Quest 3: What will Facebook’s next VR headset look like?

A first introduction to the future Facebook helmet was given by journalist Mark Gurman.

On Sunday, Apple brand specialist Mark Gurman revealed that he was able to get his hands on Facebook’s yet-to-be-announced future, the Meta Quest 3 headset. Codenamed Eureka, the device is intended as an alternative to the headset. that Apple is expected to introduce. at WWDC, their annual event scheduled for June 5.

virtual and augmented reality

The journalist gave his first impressions in his bulletin published on the US site Bloomberg. He was able to navigate the headset’s interface, as well as apps and video games. Above all, Mark Gurman was able to test the virtual reality that the device offers.

Although Meta Quest 3 does not have transparent lenses, it is capable of showing the scenery in which the user is moving using external cameras. They are integrated into two of the three vertical sensors with which the front of the helmet is equipped. It is thanks to them that the user can see what is happening behind his computer and add augmented reality elements to it.

Mark Gurman points to an improvement compared to Quest 2 (released in October 2020), particularly in VR rendering or device performance speed. If the rumors referring to an improvement in the resolution do not seem to materialize, those referring to the comfort of use are very present. Facebook’s next headset will be thinner and lighter.

about $500

However, these capabilities shouldn’t compete with the headset Apple is due to unveil next week. Against two external cameras for Meta, Apple offers a dozen to transcribe the user’s environment. Also, the Facebook helmet does not offer eye tracking and you have to be content with hand control.

On the price side, Meta Quest 3 should be more expensive than its previous version sold at $400. But prices shouldn’t skyrocket like Facebook’s latest headset, the Quest Pro (first offered at $1,500, then $999). According to Mark Gurman, the device should retail for around $500.

Facebook hasn’t announced a price or release date for Meta Quest 3. For its part, Apple should put its virtual reality headset on sale for around $3,000.
