Don’t be left behind by the Americans and the Chinese by opting for too radical a regulation. This is essentially the speech of the Delegate Minister for Digital, Jean-Noël Barrot, this May 29 on Franceinfo. In particular, he returned to the case of generative artificial intelligences, which make it possible to create text, like ChatGPT, or images, like Midjourney.
don’t stay behind
The minister refers to the draft European regulation on artificial intelligence, currently under debate in the European Parliament, and which intends to impose new limitations on the main players in the sector from 2025.
At this stage, the regulatory project aims to classify artificial intelligences according to the risk they may present to society, for example in terms of disinformation. For the most risky, the European authorities could decide to adopt transparency obligations regarding the operation of the algorithms of these tools, or audits of the databases used.
In this field, France’s position thus contrasts with that of Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, with a more offensive discourse on AI regulation. The government’s position against the “excessive” regulation of AI comes just days after a meeting between the head of OpenAI, a US giant in the sector, and Emmanuel Macron.
