New on WhatsApp. To make it more user-friendly, the messaging app is rolling out a number of new features, including username lookup and screen sharing, WABetaInfo reported May 28.
Seen in the Android beta version of the app, the search by username feature allows WhatsApp users to choose a unique username linked to their account.
This functionality means that in the future users will be able to meet by their last name instead of using a phone number as is currently the case. According to WABetaInfo, conversations started with a nickname are end-to-end encrypted.
“Archive of statutes” reserved for companies
Some Android app beta testers also noticed a new feature: screen sharing. After pressing the button that activates this option, users can start sharing the content of their screen during video calls.
The feature also saves the shared call segment. Among the other features offered to some beta testers is a “state file” setting. The latter gives companies the ability to archive statuses after 24 hours and then re-share them if they choose. WABetaInfo notes that the status archive feature appears to be limited to enterprises at the moment.
