Retouching and cropping photos in Photoshop will be obsolete as it is now possible to completely transform an image. With its Adobe Firefly solution, the digital creation software publisher has launched a new AI-powered tool: Generative Fill. It allows the user to go further in their creations: add, expand or remove content using a few keywords.
Adobe describes AI as “the future of Photoshop” and as a “revolutionary new set of magical features powered by AI and based on your creativity.”
The new functionality allows you to generate or delete backgrounds and objects. On Twitter, many images created from it circulated. Internet users integrate them into new scenarios and stage them in all kinds of situations.
Alternatively, if you feel your landscape photo wasn’t taken wide enough, Photoshop takes care of enlarging it, kind of zooming out on the image, taking inspiration from the existing decor to reproduce it as realistically as possible.

To use Generative Fill, you don’t need to be a Photoshop pro. Just select a part of the photo to edit, then a dialog box will appear on the screen. Modifications are made from English-only keywords in this dialog, then AI takes care of the rest.
“Keep it simple and to the point, and use 3-8 words, including subject and descriptors,” says Adobe. “For example, you could write an ad that says ‘A house in the woods,’ and if you want, add descriptive keywords, like ‘a red house in the woods.'”
To get started with the different options step by step, Adobe has published user guides.
This feature was developed using Firefly, Adobe’s image generator that trains on an Adobe Stock dataset, “on works under a free license and on content that has fallen into the public domain,” Photoshop specifies. At the moment, it is a beta version available everywhere except China.
In the race for the artificial image with software like Dall-E or Midjourney, Photoshop intends to continue appealing to the creativity of its users.
